It seems that the closer the track, the more I take it for
granted, and the later I leave from home. This time I managed to get there just
as the organisers were giving there pit lane briefing. It was a bit damp but
just as my session was about to go out the rain started and I was not in the
mood for messing about with the Metzeler Rennsport when I had a fresh pair of
wets which were just scrubbed in by the former owner.
This was the first time I had ridden the bike since I got
the rear spring changed on the shock. It was now firm and compliant but not firm
and harsh as it was before. It was also my first outing in the wet and it was a
matter of feeling things out instead of going for it so early in pre-season
practise which has started early for me. I must say every time I ride this bike
I like it even more.... I have never felt this way about any other bike I have
owned or ridden (don't tell the wife)
The second wet session I got in before lunch was the
wettest and I was really getting a better feel but it all finished all too soon.
The afternoon was a mix of rain, damp and a drying line. A complete session was
wasted at one stage as I had to come in after only 3 laps in order to save the
wets from ruin. There were however in the fast group a number of racers with
full wets who were prepared to burn up their tyres (not me ) me and me money are
not too be parted too quickly.
The wets were changed again back to dries and the next
session was a matter of getting used to conditions and over taking traffic. The
last session was the most fluent in the drying but damp and slightly cold
conditions. Even with traffic and having to change lines to pass at nearly every
corner I managed to consistently fit the low 56's without any huff or fuss. It
really felt easy but riding at 90 % can always feel easy and it's that extra 10%
that you need to get those couple more seconds, which can be the problem.
Anyway
progress was made again, as I was more comfortable in these conditions on the
bike when compared with better conditions during the last outing.
